Fearless smokejumper Jesse Graves (played by Howie Long), and his long time mentor, Wynt (played by Scott Glenn), feel the heat as Graves learns that the rampaging blaze that threatens to engulf him is not the only deadly situation he is faced with; he is caught in the middle of nature's ultimate inferno with escape convict Earl Shaye (played by William Forsythe). Using the firestorm to implement a daring escape plan, Shaye takes hostage a lost ornithologist, Jennifer (played by Suzy Amis), and leads Graves and his crew on a dangerous chase as time is running out.
