| Veteran actress IRMA P. HALL is the family matriarch, Mother Joe, whose Sunday night dinners of "soul food" are a family tradition.
Hall came to SOUL FOOD after completing a role in the motion picture "Buddy," opposite Rene Russo. She also co-stars in the 1997 comedy Nothing to Lose. Hall became a film actress late in life, and completely by surprise. She was a teacher reciting a poem at a Dallas gathering of artists and writers when a producer asked her to audition for a role in a film. Hall was 36 and a divorced mother of two when she got a small role in Book of Numbers twenty-five years ago. She won The Chicago Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as the lovable Aunt T in the recent film A Family Thing, which toplined James Earl Jones and Robert Duvall. Born in Texas, Hall grew up on the South Side of Chicago. She returned to Texas, teaching foreign languages and English for 27 years in Dallas public schools. During that time, Hall also helped start the Dallas Minority Repertory Theater, planning to act only as an administrator but eventually finding herself performing in dozens of plays. She used the shows as a classroom, often taking her students to the set. Since leaving teaching for acting, Hall has appeared in numerous films and television movies, and she continues to work constantly in the theater. |
