SOUL FOOD originated with writer/director George Tillman, Jr.'s own experiences as a child growing up in a very large Midwestern family.

Together with his long-time friend, Producer Bob Teitel, George decided to bring his own personal experiences to a major motion picture.

Tracey Edmonds and her husband, acclaimed producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, were in the process of establishing Edmonds Entertainment, and they realized that SOUL FOOD would be the perfect choice for the new production company's motion picture debut.

Says Kenneth Edmonds: "Edmonds Entertainment wants to make positive films that everyone can relate to. We thought the SOUL FOOD script had this potential."
George Tillman, Jr. was drawn back to his own favorite childhood memories of the massive Sunday afternoon dinners his Milwaukee grandmother served up to the whole family.

While the women cooked and gossiped, the men talked and boasted -- and the whole thing appeared incredibly dramatic and magical through a young boy's eyes...

"All my aunts and uncles, plus the ministers and, sometimes, even homeless people would come over for my grandmother's food," George remembers. It came to mean a lot more than just a wonderful meal; it was a time for family to get together. There was always a lot going on!"

These dinners planted the seed for what would become SOUL FOOD.
