Jones is perhaps best noted for his frequent collaborations with director Sam Peckinpah, including The Wild Bunch, The Ballad of Cable Hogue and Ride the High Country. His other film credits include Lone Wolf McQuade, Time Rider, Sacred Ground, The Young Lions, Lightning Jack and others too numerous to mention.

Jones also wrote and directed the noted cult science fiction film A Boy and His Dog.
